Canon Lenses

I am going nuts! Out of some free time I have just helped myself compiling a list of Canon lenses based on categorization. The categorization was split into fixed focal lengths (prime lens), zoom lens, tilt & shift lens, macro lens, IS lens, and extenders. The list was meant to be fun for reference, and perhaps it could be a comprehensive list for future wish lists.

Fixed Focal Lengths (Prime)
Fixed focal length lenses generally offer a wider maximum aperture than zoom lenses. From ultra-wide angle lenses ideal for indoor shooting to long telephoto lenses extensively used for wildlife, sports and news photography Canon has the fixed focal length lens to suit you.

Zoom Lenses

Zoom lenses are very convenient. The equivalent of two or more fixed focal length lenses in one unit. The maximum aperture of some zoom lenses changes as you alter the focal length, but through-the-lens (TTL) metering takes this into account to give correct exposure.

Tilt & Shift Lenses

These special lenses with their tilt and shift movements further expand photographic possibilities. Tilt movements allow you to obtain a wide depth of field even at the maximum aperture and still keep the entire subject in focus. Shift movements correct the trapezoidal effect seen in pictures taken of tall objects such as buildings, so that the subject does not look distorted.

Range:
TS-E 24 mm f/3.5L – £1106
TS-E 45 mm f/2.8 – £1106
TS-E 90 mm f/2.8 – £1106

Macro Lenses

To bring small things into full-sized view, select from one of the lenses in this category. Macro lenses can uncover detail that would be impossible to detect by the eye and give new perspective to extremely minute subjects such as insects or the petals of a small flower.

Range:
EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM – £350
EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM – £476
EF 180 mm f/3.5L Macro USM – £1266
EF 50 mm f/2.5 Macro – £240
MP-E65 f/2.8 1-5 x Macro – £840

IS Lenses

Some Canon EF lenses incorporate an image stabiliser to prevent camera shake from spoiling the shot. This is particularly useful on close-ups or at slow shutter speeds, in situations where a tripod camera cannot be used. Optical shake is detected by gyro sensors which provide data to neutralise the shake. Some EF lenses have two IS modes, including one for panned shots to help you enjoy still greater photographic freedom.

Extenders

Extender is Canon’s name for a teleconverter. These high-performance accessories multiply the effective focal length of an attached lens by 1.4x or 2x. For example, a 200mm lens with Extender 1.4x has an effective focal length of 280mm: with the Extender 2x, this increases to 400mm. Extenders are only compatible with selected EF lenses, including the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, EF 70-200mm f/4L, EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM, EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM and fixed length L-series lenses of 135mm or higher.
